Romania Digital Nomad Visa
1Core Eligibility
- Be a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland.
- Work remotely for a company registered outside Romania, or own/hold shares in such a company.
- This must be verified based on current regulations and individual circumstances.
2Minimum Income
- Your income must be at least 3× Romania's average gross monthly salary.
- This threshold must be proven for each of the 6 months before applying, and for the full requested visa period. Because Romania's average salary changes yearly, the exact EUR/RON threshold shifts too — confirm the current figure with IGI or evisa.mae.ro.
3Visa & Residence Duration
- The long-stay digital nomad visa is initially issued for 90 days; after entering Romania, you apply for a residence permit.
- The first renewal is only 6 months, not a full year — a detail some informal sources get wrong.
- This must be verified based on current regulations and individual circumstances.

💶Taxes: What the Rule Actually Is
Contrary to the common claim ("if you already pay tax elsewhere, you're exempt in Romania"), the actual legal rule is a day-count test, not a where-you-pay-tax test: your foreign-sourced income is exempt from Romanian tax and social contributions for up to 6 months within a 12-month period, provided your total stay remains under 183 days per year. Exceeding 183 days makes you a Romanian tax resident by law, subject to normal Romanian taxation — regardless of tax already paid elsewhere.
👨👩👧Family Reunification: Not Available
Contrary to a claim repeated on some other sites, IGI's own family-reunification page does not list the digital nomad residence permit among its named exceptions (such as the EU Blue Card or researcher permit), and requires the general rule of the sponsor holding a permit valid for at least 1 year — while this permit's first period is only 6 months. In practice, this route is not designed for bringing a spouse or children along. Confirm the exact current position with IGI before making any family plans around it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a job offer from a Romanian company for this visa?
No. This route is specifically designed for people who work for an employer or business outside Romania and need no Aviz de Muncă or Romanian employer.
Can I bring my spouse and children with me?
Under IGI's current family-reunification rules, this permit is not on the list of named exceptions and its first period is only 6 months, so in practice this route is not built for family reunification — confirm this directly with IGI.
Do I owe Romanian tax if I already pay tax in my home country?
Romania's exemption is based on a day-count, not on where you already pay tax: you're exempt for up to 6 months within a 12-month period, provided you stay under 183 days per year; crossing that line makes you a Romanian tax resident regardless of tax paid elsewhere.
